Website as a Service

What the term means

Website as a Service borrows its structure from software subscriptions. Instead of buying a website as a finished object, you subscribe to having one: it gets built, it gets hosted, it gets kept correct, and it gets changed when your business changes. One fee covers all of that, and the arrangement ends when you say so.

The traditional alternative is a project. Someone quotes a build fee, delivers a site, and the relationship ends at launch. Everything afterwards is a new conversation and usually a new invoice: hosting here, a plugin license there, an hourly rate when the prices on the services page go out of date.

Neither model is dishonest. They just distribute the risk differently. A project puts the risk of the site ageing badly on you. A subscription puts it on the provider, because a site that stops being useful is a subscription that gets canceled.

What arrives in the subscription

Every month

  • A website designed and built from scratch for your business
  • Hosting, HTTPS and your domain connected
  • Security updates, backups and uptime monitoring
  • Content edits within 24 hours of you asking
  • New pages as the business adds services
  • Technical SEO upkeep, so the foundations stay sound
  • A person who answers email, rather than a ticket queue

What you do not pay

  • A build fee up front
  • A separate hosting invoice
  • Hourly rates for small changes
  • Plugin and theme license renewals
  • A cancellation fee if you leave
Compared

Three ways to get a website.

Build it yourself

Cheapest in money, most expensive in weekends. Good if the site is simple, you enjoy the process, and you will still be updating it eighteen months from now. Many owners are, and for them this is the right answer.

Commission a build

A one-off fee for a site made to your brief. Suits businesses with complex requirements and someone in-house to own the upkeep. The question to settle before signing is what happens the first time you need a change.

Subscribe to the service

No build fee, a monthly cost that does not end, and nothing on your to-do list. Suits owners whose weeks are already full and whose details change often enough that a static site goes stale.

We have written the long version of the first comparison in website builders vs done-for-you, including where builders genuinely win. If you are weighing the second, how much a small business website should cost covers the one-off versus ongoing arithmetic properly.

The trade, stated plainly

You give up two things. You do not get the source code or the design files, because those are part of the product rather than the deliverable. And the site depends on the subscription continuing, so if you stop paying it comes down.

In return you never pay a build fee, you never manage a hosting account, and the site stays current without you scheduling any of it. You keep your content, which we export on request within 30 days of cancellation, and you keep your domain, which stays registered in your name and can be pointed anywhere.

That trade suits a lot of small businesses and does not suit all of them. If you want to own everything outright and have someone in-house to run it, commission a build instead. We would rather say that here than three months into a subscription.

How it starts

Describe your business in a couple of lines. We reply within one business day.

If you want the detail on any one piece: web design for small business covers the build, website hosting covers the infrastructure, and website maintenance covers everything that happens after launch.

FAQ

Website as a Service questions.

A subscription that covers the whole life of a website rather than just the build. One monthly fee pays for the design, the hosting, the security and the changes, and the arrangement ends whenever you want it to.
A designer sells you a finished site and then bills separately for anything after it. A subscription keeps the site correct as your business changes, because the person who built it is still responsible for it a year later.
You own your content: your words, photographs, prices and business information. The underlying product, meaning the code and design system, stays ours. On cancellation we provide a one-off export of your content on request.
No fixed term. You can cancel at any time with 30 days notice and no penalty, and there is no setup fee to write off if you do.
The site comes down. That is the honest trade in a subscription model, and it is why we do not lock anyone into a term: the arrangement has to keep earning its place every month.
Five business days from when we have your details, with a preview link before anything publishes.
